I have really long, thick hair too. I wanted to get it layered, anything new, because I was so tired of it being straight and boring. My hair stylist said that layers weren't good for long hair, though, because it ends up looking chunky. However, she recommended angles in the front, with a side-swept bang. So that's what I did, and I think it looks great. Talk to your stylist and see what (s)he thinks. Good luck!
