I would suggest you go to the groomers for this. The first time, the groomer can show you what to do and what scissors to buy. You can learn the technique at the groomers and then trim your dachshund at home whenever his hair gets long!
I will be going through this once my LH Doxie pup hair grows longer and thats what I plan to do.

why didn't you buy a smooth coated Dachshund then? go to a dog show and ask the exhibitors of the long haired doxies - they willl be happy to offer you sound advice..
