I dont have a guinea pig yet and i dont want to limit myself to just short hair guinea pigs. i dont mean a total shave down either. i just want to make it a little lower matnece. also i would only need to do this because i am planning on adopting one from the shelter so if they happen to have a long haired one when i adopt i will be able to adopt it.

Yes, you can give them haircuts. I have two long haired pigs %26amp; I have to cut the hair on their bums and back legs really short or it gets icky in a very short time (as in ONE day) %26amp; then a bum bath is needed. I leave all of the rest of the hair long %26amp; brush it regularly.

They do require a fair amount of grooming to keep their long hair mat free. Make sure you have not only the time to do this, but the inclination as well. It can get tedious after a while.

If you need to do a hair cut, use round tipped scissors. Piggies are not known for sitting still very well and you wouldn't want to have an accident.

I imagine that you can. I have never owned a long-haired guinea pig before. If you notice it gets in the guinea pigs eyes, or, it sweeps across the floor, then, I would cut it. But, if you want the real answer, I would suggest talking the animal shelter, or your local guinea pig vet first!

my guinea pig has long hair too. i would only trim the hair, like around it's eyes. it is supposed to have long hair, that is just their breed :o)

Yes. I have a friend who is a breeder (And I have already checked, there are no rescues in W.A so don't go huff!!!) and she breeds mainly short haired but she has probably 3/4/5 families of long haired varities. She was telling us about them as I walked around her patio looking at the guinea pigs. She has to cut her guinea pigs hair a little bit every now and then so that the guinea pigs are not as likely to get heat stroke, to keep the guinea pigs feeling comfortable and to keep their hair in a beautiful state!!

Brushing daily is a great way of keeping the hair neat and not matted. Washing should also be done every 3 months and spot washing every now and then.

yes as a matter of fact i gave mine a haircut yesterday because i had to bathe him almost every day because the hair around his rear end was getting matted with urine and poop. so i just cut around his rear end and not all over.

Umm no you SHOULDN"T do that. they have long hair for a reason. it would not be very good for the guinea pig. and if you want to get their hair cut don't do it yourself. have like someone from the shelter do it. or someone from the petstore.
